Hi and welcome to the Cancer Secrets podcast. I am your host and guide, Dr. Jonathan Stegall. Cancer is like a thief who has come to steal, kill and destroy. I have personally seen it wreak havoc on patients, friends and even my own family. But I am on a mission to change the cancer paradigm. Who? The practice of integrative oncology cancer treatment that integrates the best of conventional medicine with the best of alternative therapies backed by science and personalized to each patient. You need a positive voice you can trust. This podcast will share valuable information to give you practical hope for a better outcome. So I invite you to join me on this journey as we seek to change the cancer paradigm together. Hi. This is Dr. Stegall. I wanted to share some information with you because it's extremely important. As we know, the novel coronavirus called COVID 19 originated in China and is affecting most of the world right now. There is a lot of information out there, some real some imagined. And I'm going to briefly discuss what we know at this point, because I treat cancer patients all day. I also will be focusing on some information which is especially important if you have cancer or if you live with someone who has cancer. Now, COVID 19 is spread primarily by respiratory droplets. So when someone sneezes or coughs or even talks, the virus is spread. Now, viruses contained inside. Those droplets can gain access to others through the eyes, nose and mouth.

Speaker1:
This is why it's important to practice excellent hygiene. This means taking great care to wash your hands regularly and not touch your face any more than you absolutely have to. We've also learned that COVID 19 stays airborne for up to 3 hours and can live on services such as plastic and stainless steel for up to three days. It can even live on cardboard for up to a day. Now, this is a highly contagious virus, which is why we're seeing it spread so rapidly. And please be aware that most people who get COVID 19 will not have significant symptoms. They might have symptoms of a mild flu or a mild cold or even no symptoms at all. However, these individuals can serve as vectors, transmitting it to those who are much more susceptible, including those with compromised immune systems. Now, in terms of the general population, we assume that anyone who is over age 60 or who has any chronic illness, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, to name a few, are more susceptible to COVID 19. And the data right now on cancer patients with COVID 19 is scarce since this is such a new disease. However, a study published in The Lancet Oncology in February of 2020 found that patients with cancer were more likely to develop COVID 19. Now, on the surface, this isn't really surprising. However, the number of patients studied in this in this study was small. Of roughly 1500 patients in the study with COVID 19, only 18 of those had a history of cancer.

Speaker1:
And of these 18, only four had undergone surgery or chemotherapy. Within the previous month, 12 had recovered from their initial cancer treatments, and none had any obvious immune system suppression. So the study authors concluded that the COVID 19 infections in the 12 previous cancer survivors were not associated with their cancer history. However, it's important to note that those with cancer did have a worse outcomes from COVID 19 compared to the Noncancer population. A caveat here is that the cancer patients had an average age of 63, while those who did not have cancer had an average age of 48. So thus, it's hard to know at this point if the worse outcome among cancer patients was due to the cancer or due to being older overall and thus being more immune compromised. And it also could have been a combination of the two. So we really don't know at this point. But regardless whether you're in the high risk population or not, I strongly recommend the following. Number one, stay home. Social distancing right now is going to be the most important thing you can do to avoid getting COVID 19. Now, if you already have it, you will certainly reduce the transmission to someone else by staying home. This means avoiding restaurants, parties, vacations, and even routine errands, like going to the grocery store. Now, if you can help it, please make sure of to use grocery delivery and food delivery services so you don't have to leave your home if possible.

Speaker1:
Assume that every container has the COVID 19 virus and clean all these containers very carefully before putting them inside your cabinets or refrigerator. Number two Wash your hands using soap and warm water if possible, make sure to scrub both the front and back of your hands for at least 15 to 20 seconds. And this includes your foams. A lot of people don't use their films like they should. They don't wash their thumbs. So if you don't have soap, hand sanitizer is certainly better than nothing. And definitely try not to touch your face. This includes your eyes, nose, mouth and ears. I also strongly recommend the following. Immune boosting practices. First drink plenty of water, shoot for at least half of your body weight and ounces per day. So if you weigh £200, you'd shoot for at least 100 ounces of water every day. Number to exercise as much as you can. We know that exercise is definitely immune boosting. Strive for 20 to 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every day. So a brisk walk where you get your heart rate up but you're also able to carry on a conversation is really the goal. You don't need to do anything super intense. Try to do this at least 4 to 5 times a week, but ideally every day if you can. As this has been shown to boost the immune system now, although no dietary supplements have been proven to treat or prevent COVID 19, I do recommend the staples such as vitamin D3, beta glucan and colloidal silver.

Speaker1:
I personally take 10,000 international units of vitamin D that's abbreviated. I use every single day. It's Vitamin D3 and most people need between 5000 to 10000 IU's daily. I also take a beta glucan supplement called Beta 13d Glucan and that's dosed at 500 milligrams per £50 of body weight. So a person weighing £200 would take 2000 milligrams of beta glucan every day. Now I love the transfer point beta glucan from Better Way Health. Colloidal silver is a natural antiviral supplement, but the type you use is of paramount importance. Low quality silver formulations aren't pure, and they can actually turn your skin blue if you take enough of it for a long enough period of time. So we don't want that. So the Argent in 23 brand from Natural Immunogenic is a bioactive, silver, hydra, salt and purified water. I recommend one tablespoon taking sublingual every 4 hours for immune support. So you hold it under your tongue for approximately 30 seconds and then you swallow it. Now, I'm not trying to sell you any of these products. In fact, you can't buy them from me. I'm not on the payroll for any of these companies that manufacture these products. I'm simply mentioning them in this video only because I have experience using them myself, for my family and for my patients. And I truly believe they're helpful in supporting the immune system.

Speaker1:
Again, I'm not aware of any research stating that these supplements are confirmed to kill COVID 19, but I am recommending them to my patients and to my family. And as I said, I'm taking them myself just as part of an overall comprehensive strategy to boost immune function as much as we can. And I will warn you that we are going to see more COVID 19 cases diagnosed in the coming weeks and possibly the coming months as well. And sadly, more people are going to die from this virus in the future as well. So I'm saying that not to cause panic, but because we must all take this very seriously. However, with proper hand hygiene, social distancing and other immune boosting strategies, I firmly believe that we will beat this thing. And that brings me to my final point. We cannot let fear of this nasty virus overwhelm us. Fear is not only unnecessary, but it's counterproductive. The Bible tells us not to fear, and I believe that God is bigger than all of this. And my prayer is that you and yours stay healthy and encouraged. We will all get through this together. Let's use this time to work together, to cooperate, and to practice gratitude despite the negativity around us. We have so much to be thankful for. Take time now to count your many blessings. If you haven't done so lately. Thank you so much for watching. Stay well and I'll talk with you soon.
